Is trade governance changing?

Resumen


Preferential trade agreements have experienced an extraordinary expansion since 1990s. This issue is fundamental because it calls into question global governance in world trade. Crafted in the post Cold War world, WTO function was undermined as the main instrument of governing world trade. PTA’s seem inextricably associated with the globalization logics. Similar observation obliges us to look at the globalized world with a more powerful lens. At the end of Uruguay Round, WTO became the main pillar of the world trade system. The burgeoning of preferential trade agreements since the last decade of the twentieth century, the WTO position as the major tool for trade governance is seriously threatened.
